Spitchwick v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 09 Jul 2021 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won 6 Wickets

Match report Under the (presumed) watchful eye of the lady of the eponymous manor and 40 (+/- 10%) sheep, the beautiful ground of Spitchwick provided the setting for a low scoring thriller. My memory of the first few overs of Spitchwick's innings is somewhat hazy on account of me not actually being there (the sheep are great hiking companions but are less useful when asking for directions). By the time I had successfully navigated the country roads of Dartmoor, the umpire quipped that I had almost missed the match; a comment that only made sense once I checked the scoreboard to find our opposition struggling somewhat, having been reduced to 10-5 off the 5 overs.

As I understand, the first wicket fell due to a controversial run out, debate over which lasted even after the innings ended. In spite of the doubt, without the benefit of some drone (or sheep) enabled third umpire, the batter was sent on his way. Soon followed a superb over from Ben, in which he took three wickets without conceding a run, before taking a catch off Matt's bowling to leave the home team at 7-5 after 15 minutes of play. Spitchwick rallied after this with a solid partnership that was ultimately broken by Matt's next wicket, caught off his own bowling. John C then bowled the other partner in this pair shortly after, before the incoming batter cut loose, forcing Fraser to stretch his legs to save a considerable number of boundaries on the downhill stretch of the outfield. Spitchwick ended without further loss, setting a target of 85 to beat, which captain Fraser (in fact, the evidently shy and retiring Jonathan was captain. Ed.) assured us would be a competitive total.

Like a three legged sheep, the Erratics' innings got off to a wobbly start, with both Alex and myself falling cheaply. John C and Chris then took the opportunity to demonstrate how to protect your wicket with some particularly stalwart defence displayed by the former. At the halfway stage, victory was looking unlikely, with the Erratics posting a midway score of 27. The end of John C's vigil brought Fraser out to middle, at which point Chris started working his way through the gears, finding repeated boundaries with some wonderfully timed shots before retiring. This gave Mike the opportunity to show off his Usain Bolt impersonation, at one point securing a quick two when, if I'm being honest, I thought a single was pushing it. His luck was to be run out a few balls later, however, when a pinpoint accurate throw from a fielder, who had only a sole stump to aim for, sent Mike back to makeshift pavilion. It was left to Fraser and Matt to bring the Erratics home with a measured combination of aggression, placement and diving to the crease to secure the winning run.

After a close run match, it was then time to relax with a beer (but only for those with cash!) in the countryside setting with some friendly chaps. Overall, the evening boasted a great fixture against jovial opposition in a lovely setting. I look forward to next season's (hopeful) return, particularly now I know how to get there.
