Match report
Writing this as the rain steams down on Dartmoor, Test Match on mute (like the crowd at Old Trafford as Lab and Mitchell hold firm). Its a chance to look back to Thursday at Newton St Cyres ..
On paper we looked to have a strong batting line up but as it turned out not strong enough against these opponents - who apparently have lost only once at home this year.
Batting first I opened with Matt to the new pink ball which for a few overs swung considerably.Matt was out bowled tone that didn’t swing. Anuj who deals in boundaries got off to a quick start and sadly a quick finish. Jonathan like wise scored a boundary but fell shortly after. Richard and I then put-on some runs though as it turned out at a rate that left too much for the big guns lower down to do. After we retired in succession on 30 , some of their most effective bowlers confined us to a gettable total - Krups in particular getting a very good delivery when he threatened to find his range. James hit a splendid 6 over long off before holing out.
All was well at the start of the opponents innings. Lee took 2 wickets in the first over - both beautiful in swingers that bowled the batters . Oh we thought this looks like quite a good total asking them to chase 123! That sadly was the end of the wickets! Soon the next pair were finding the boundaries with ease whoever Fraser turned to bowl - James got some turn against the left hand but no edge. Fraser bowled tightly. Matt mixed it up and when he found his direction caused hesitation in the batters. Hope now shifted to seeing these two retire - Maybe they had a long tail??
Not .. it transpired. The next partnership was equally untroubled though Lee came back and somehow swung a ball between the batted blade and the leg stump. To no avail - in the (swift) end - they achieved the total with nearly 5 overs to spare.
And no food at the pub to follow - no wonder most of the Erratics cleared off - the three of us who stayed for a pint enjoyed the evening sun.
Phoenix like the erratics will of course rise again. ( I have been over using the ‘life as a rollercoaster’ metaphor too much recently - so thought it was time to roll out a different cliche)
