Match report
Who are we??

Throughout the match I was pondering this question….. with 7 paid up Erratics and 3 players from the opposing team should I as captain be urging on the ‘Erratics’ or coin a portmanteau name for the occasion – no satisfactory epithet came to mind but whoever we were we had a very good game and more than usual that was down to the opponents – their spirit and their generosity in keeping hold of their two octogenarians and giving us three fit youngish players – two of them – Brendon and Paul - turned in great bowling performances.

Star of the day however must be of course Jonathan K – to begin with he switched days to help us raise a teamlette of 7. And then he was dynamic in the field and when I was scratching my head to stem the tide of runs in the middle of their innings I turned to his occasional loopy leggies and not only did he slow the runs but took a key wicket. But best of all…… you will have to wait ….whilst I put this narrative in some kind of shape.

Our small band of players assembled in this green oasis of a ground with standing water on parts of the square following a thunderstorm in the night. Their groundsman arrived and said he would put the roller on the track used on Thursday and we would certainly get a game.

I won the toss and elected to field – with our 7 and 3 – for a 40 overs game – max of 8 overs per bowler. We needed a good start on a ground with a short boundary which was soon cleared by their opener who was bowled next ball by the first of several classy googlies from Phil P.Phil and Suhaib subdued the batsman – Suhaib with sharp pace and in duckers; Phil with his flight, occasional surprising bounce and turn(One ball – spoken of in the pub afterwards by the batsman who was their premium league player – did him completely – he left it outside of off stump only to see it spin and bounce over middle – I keeping wicket do benefit from having the best view in the house for such gems).Phil got another wicket soon after and we were into the cream of the batting.

We kept the run rate down with accurate bowling from our CF contributors until Brierley got his reward Jonathan clinging on to a fierce drive at extra cover from Coe. Squire came to the wicket and started to find his range – sadly Danny lost his when he came on to bowl and for the first time it looked like CF might post a sizeable total.

At this point I turned to the occasional and apologetic spin of JK and soon got the reward every captain hopes for – Grant holing out to Dan T at backward point. After this we could apply the screws again to the lower order batsmen and Suhaib got his reward long overdue for a second spell of consistently searching bowling – getting a victim clean bowled having had a pretty plum LBW appeal turned out the previous ball. Phil returned to take another two wickets with a demonstration of spin and control in only his second match of the year.

Tea was sizeable for 7 erratics and we started after tea in good spirits feeling that the total was a gettable one. I asked Mark P and Dan T. to get us going and they were up against the pick of the CF
Bowling attack – Coe bowling sharp off spin from the end with the bounce; Squire sending down pacy leg cutters with a very deft keeper standing up. Mark middle the first 4 deliveries and looked confident but inexplicably missed the next ball. With Brent –our other CF compatriot – Dan started to blunt this attack; but again when he was looking as though he was growing in confidence was beaten by the turning ball. JK came to the wicket with the Erratics on 6 for 2. Brent hung around for a bit than yours truly joined JK at the crease. We saw the opening bowlers off and when the more flighty bowlers came on talked each other into a modicum of sense until AF just past the drinks break played a chip shot back to the bowler.
Now JK had the bit between his teeth and with Suhaib plundered some boundaries. Suhaib with a rush of blood heaved and missed and Danny then came in to keep Jonathan company. They kept up with the asking rate with quick running and positive defence when Coe and Squire returned into the attack. Danny succumbed but JK got confident support from Brendon (CF) and in the end the total was overhauled with no alarums or even scramble. It was an innings by JK combining serenity and pugnaciousness …..and unsurprisingly a jug was forthcoming in the Half Moon in the village.
