Match report 5th July saw Erratics venture to north Devon's Valley of the Rocks, which, as picturesque as it is on Google's StreetView, is even more impressive in person, with plenty of sun shining, and just a few clouds. With 10 players all set to go, Captain Wright's acquisition, Edmond, was expected to `jet' down from Durham and complete the line-up, but no sign of him so far. Then, having lost the toss, Erratics set out to bat.

Openers Jan and Krupakar paved the way, with Krupakar's leg glances and Jan's shots to the covers both giving cause for umpire arms to waggle. Krupakar succumbed LBW, which brought Mark Hailwood to the crease. Jan and Mark formed a roller-coaster-run-rate 89-run partnership, with Jan continuing to find the boundary and Mark H soon joining the party. Eventually caught on 56, Jan's textbook batting display was admired by all from the pavilion.

Captain Wright then took to the field, in a thoroughly warmed-up state following an airline-stewardess-like display of umpire actions and also some air batting (cricket's equivalent to air guitar). With 10 overs left, Captain Wright had clearly decided it time to throw caution to the rather strong westerly wind whistling down the valley, and target 200. Unfortunately, this led to Mark H's wicket, the second catch to the Lynton `keeper, but brought Nigel -- after being moved up the batting order -- in to bat. Sixes in quick succession from Captain Wright and Nigel brought on separate search teams to scour the bracken for the lost balls, but without success. Nonetheless, Nigel was equally able to dispatch the second replacement ball into the bracken. Captain Wright and Nigel brought the score to 180, before both were out, bowled, in the quest for runs. Three overs left: enter Dan and Danny with the daunting task of quick runs. Danny scored a fast 1, before Varun entered and, with Dan, closed the innings to
leave Lynton a target of 197 to win. Back in the pavilion, Captain Wright's hopes of Edmond arriving to were ever fading.

It was time for lunch and, apparently, according to Captain Wright, a host cannot be judged by its ground alone: its egg sandwiches must also cut the mustard and, so I am assured, Lynton's did. Also on offer were sausages, scones and various cakes, and egg-free sandwiches completed a wonderful spread. We left for fielding duties in a well-fuelled state.

Varun and Nigel opened the bowling, stifling any hopes the hosts might have had of reaching their target quickly, and also bringing a few chances to the field. The batting openers' left- and right-hand combination kept Captain Wright on his toes setting the field, and the field on theirs with the challenging task of remembering positions. First bowling change saw Mark H and Ben take over. And it was time for a wicket: a run out courtesy of some quick reactions by Varun. And another to Mark H, bowling the incoming batsman. In contrast, at the other end, Ben allowed non-facing batman Keech to demonstrate his keen eye, by directing the bracken search team directly to each of the balls that Lynton's facing batsman, Ralph Jnr., despatched for six. With the hosts past 150, and with nearly 15 overs left to make their 197 target, a bowling change saw Krupakar introduced and Nigel return, with Mark Phillips sporting the `keeper's gear. Two fairly quick wickets, including Nigel taking Keech's for 74, and Erratics'
hopes were raised; Lynton's run-rate fell, and a final bowling change saw Danny introduced and Varun return. The pair continued to trouble the batsmen, but wickets proved elusive; Lynton reached their 197 target with six overs and six wickets to spare. A valiant final Erratic spurt, but not quite enough on this occasion.

Departing the pavilion, Captain Wright seemed to had given up on mystery man Edmond arriving, which I judge from the words ``if only Edmond had come''. (Perhaps next week, hey?) Dan, Jan, Mark P, Varun and Krupakar scaled the side of the valley for a vantage point to give some final memories of the trip, and later joined most of the others, and some of Lynton's players, at the Sandrock Hotel. After some light refreshments, it was back towards Exeter. The result aside, it was enjoyable day at a wonderful location for cricket. Long may Lynton and Lynmouth continue on the Erratics fixture list.
