Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Philanthropists on Sun 14 Sep 2014 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 30 runs

Match report Another warm and cloudy September Sunday at Clyst St. George ground and the Erratics came into the match with a well-balanced team against the Philanthropists. With the regular but short pre-match warm up rituals of the Erratics, the match has already started with the Philanthropists batting first. Their openers looked like they were in a hurry for runs in the beginning but, Nigel Rutherford and Dominic Prosser started with some tight bowling from both ends and contained the opponents in the first few overs. They were well-supported by our fielders as this match saw some excellent fielding and catching from the Erratics with no easy runs given away. Dominic got the first breakthrough with an away swinging delivery taken at point and the second wicket did not take much time to come the Erratics way. This time it was Daniel Thistlethwaite, who standing at mid-on, took a well-judged high catch to give Nigel his wicket. As and when we thought that things were getting easier, in came the captain from Philanthropists who, with well-timed shots and hitting boundaries all around the ground, raced on to a century, and well-supported by his opener. As the match progressed, Erratics got in bowling changes regularly which saw some tight and disciplined spin bowling from Fraser Chave and the young Freddie. Chris Ferro troubled the opener with some quick and tight out-side-the-off-stump bowling and engaged in a tight contest with the centurion with some deadly Yorkers. Their captain seemed to have later become comfortable with the conditions and went on to get his century and with the company of Paul Laverick’s quick fire 20, carried on their score to 184/4 in 35 overs. Dominic finished with three wickets at the end for Erratics.

With hunger for a win, and a target set over 5.2 runs per over, Erratics went into bat with some positive vibes from everyone. Sending in a left and a right hand combination in Fraser and Andrew McRae to open, captain Andrew Forrester set them a target of minimum 40 runs in the first 10 overs. The openers came out even better at 43 for no loss in the first 10 overs. Fraser continued his good form from the previous matches; solid in defence and driving and pulling for boundaries. The fall of Fraser’s wicket was followed by another two quick wickets bringing in Andrew Forrester and Chris Ferro to the crease. Both of them built in a good partnership with the run rate maintained at 5 an over; and the target seemed quite achievable. When things seemed just under control Andrew was out for a nice low catch by the bowler himself. Now with Chris and Nigel at the crease, the ‘centurion’ and the man of the first half of the match came back into action. This time with the ball in his hand, takes a small run up and delivers a ‘rare to see’ ball that was pitched way outside the off- stump and comes back to hit the stumps. (Such deliveries are NOT that common even in the sub-continent pitches). No breather at all for the batsman!!! Chris hit some classy boundaries before another spinning ball from him rolled back on the stumps. Towards the end there was a good fight by Danny and Dominic but Erratics had to fall short by around 30 runs.

All together it was a good match with both teams having chances to win until the few last overs but the victory ended up with the Philanthropists. It was well-deserved for their captain for his all-round display with a century and 3 quick wickets.
