A beautiful sunny evening over the scenic Bridford pitch and much anticipation brewing in the stately plastic club tent. The Erratics won the toss and elected to field, a fateful decision given the way the evening’s events unfolded. Early bowling more than justified the Erratics illustrious name. Wides and byes contributed handsomely to Bridford’s high scoring rate and also prolonged the time taken to complete the overs, important given the failing light later on. By the time Bridford had reached 60, the run rate was around 10 an over with pesky Mr Extras contributing half of the score. Despite this Erratics had managed to remove two of the Bridford openers.

The Erratics won the toss and elected to field, a fateful decision given the way the evening’s events unfolded. Early bowling more than justified the Erratics illustrious name. Later the bowling settled down and John Carroll’s four overs in particular were impressive, removing three batsmen and stemming the earlier run fest. Matt Cook, once he found his rhythm also looked good. Bridford however continued to score well, with boundary balls frequently disappearing into the rough grass, cleverly cropped at optimal ball obscuring height and prompting ball searching operations which further prolonged the time taken to complete the 20 overs.

By the end of their innings Bridford had amassed an imposing 165 for 8 with Alex Gibson 67 and extras 42 contributing the bulk of the runs. Erratics early batters succumbed to the opening bowling from Bridford which proved to be faster, bouncier and certainly more accurate than Erratics had managed. Bridford’s bowler Blackie was particularly impressive removing the first three Erratics batsmen in his four over spell. Before this however Matt Cook and Jonathan Kirby had played some impressive strokes.

Later Erratics batting gallantly addressed the need for quick runs. Peter Hinds and John Carroll were impressive building a score rapidly that threatened to reach the required total. Once the sun had gone down however the light faded rapidly and the ball was becoming harder to see. The innings ended with spirited hitting by Sam ‘Freddy Flint-Cook’ who, once he managed to connect in the gathering gloom, struck a number of impressive boundaries.

Viewing from the pavilion tent by this stage was an interesting experience of speculating where the ball would drop out of the darkening skies once Sam had connected.

By the end of the game Erratics had built an impressive score of 149 for 7 falling just short of Bridford’s total. The game ended with a the moon rising imperiously over the ground and Erratics left to dwell on wasted opportunities for at least as long as it takes to drive to the Bridford Arms.
