Match Report: Phil Power

This was Harberton’s first ever match against the Erratics and even if it ended in victory by a large margin, the game was suitably competitive.

Winning the toss, Harberton opted to bat on a tricky wicket that had been softened up by the deluge of rain in the previous 24 hours. Erratics started with 10 players as James was still operating on Summer time, it was a classy arrival as James arrived in his convertible wearing his white driving cap, he had also picked a ground where you have to drive along the whole length of the pitch! It meant Penny opening the bowling only to have a wicket denied her as Buckner edged, but remained at the crease. Those of us behind the crease viewed this differently. Batting was not easy as the ball came off the wicket slowly making timing of shots difficult. Harberton built their innings slowly, Powell batted watchfully although he crashed the occasional loose ball to the boundary until in the 13th over he lost patience and was bowled wonderfully by Cook for 20 with the score at 39. Gareth’s bowling was simply outstanding, superbly exploiting the ‘corridor of uncertainty’ – when he wasn’t taking wickets - no batsman could score against him. He thoroughly deserved his 4 wickets for a miserly 8 runs in 8 overs bowled in two spells.

Oakey replaced Powell and the score continued to progress slowly, reaching 70 after 20 overs. Harberton’s hundred arrived in the 23rd over. It was Oakey who exploded into action, as 18 runs were smashed off one over to all parts of the ground. Oakey was finally dismissed for 62 in the 30th over with the score at 148, caught by Forrester off Pearson. Wickets then tumbled regularly as Chris (2 for 28) and Gareth ripped through the Harberton tail, 202 was always going to be a difficult score to get on this wicket.

After a good tea Peter became Peter the Prescient, Harberton opened with a veteran pair Goldsmith (1 for 32) and Shephard (1 for 19). Shephard’s first ball was probably the most significant.

“Uh-oh, a slow bowler, Chris Ferro doesn't like those, watch him find a fielder” said Peter.

A well pitched up delivery was mistimed by Chris and lobbed up to Elliot Buckner at mid on

This put the Erratics batting on to the back foot and the score rose slowly as Forrester (18) and Cook (27) batted watchfully. Andrew was then out LBW, “The ball must hit the batsman in line between the stumps and be going on to hit.” (Peter's final words before going in to umpire. The very next ball, he gave Andrew LBW.)

Wickets kept falling regularly as the game ran away from the Erratics as the run rate kept growing. Power as the patron saint of lost causes remained with 43, finally getting to bat with Peter. We were left with another of Peter’s predictions

“Oh please, Penny, don't get out, or the pointlessness of my existence will be fully revealed to all. (Next ball, Penny was out, and Peter had to go in to bat as #11)

It was off to the Church House Inn nestling quietly in the beautiful South Devon countryside, to reflect on upon the nature of cricket, its forms of practice, its history and its influence in shaping the human form physically, emotionally and morally. Well a good pint or two of Betty Stokes anyway.
