Nomads v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Tue 09 Jun 2009 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 8 runs

Match report Match Report by Phil Ellis

This game was something of a local derby (best not use that word in front of Martin) with several Nomads players familiar to all of the Erratics team, apart perhaps from debutant Yorkshireman Chris Mellett who has come to the Erratics via Chris Ferro's brother, Leeds and Holme-on-Spalding Moor, which is quite close to Wetwang. I think that this was a first game for Triin Troon also, so welcome to both.

There were whispers that the Nomads had brought a strong batting line- up and this was confirmed in the first few overs with Barnet going after opening bowlers Burroughs and Ellis and then change bowlers Oughton and Cook. Barnet was finally bowled on 76 from an exquisite delivery by Matt Cook, who was unlucky not to have got him a couple of overs previously when dropped (ok ...by me) on the boundary. Otherwise, the Erratics' fielding was tight, especially the ever- energetic Ed Keedwell.

It is worth recording here that Matt informed us that Barnet had scored a hundred in the same kind of style against Clyst. After he'd gone, we did manage to contain West and Greco later in the innings. Indeed, John Curtis bowled the final over for just 2 runs. Despite a run-chase of 8 per over I think we were all pleased that the Nomads got nowhere near the 200 that looked likely at one stage, especially as we only had 10 fielders. Al was late .... very late.

And so, to bat.

Matt Cook and Chris Mellett went to the crease and it was immediately clear that Cook was fired up and with short boundaries we all had hope that we could chase this high score. Chris fell to an LBW just as he was settling. He was replaced by Tim Mileham who hit a couple of big fours before being bowled by Ken Horne. Ellis came in hoping that he could see off the very accurate Nomads opener Ewan (I think) and run up and down while Matt hit the big shots. The former was achieved but the latter was not to be when, on 26, Matt miss-timed an on drive and was caught at square leg off the slow left-hander Andy Freeman, who finished with 3-32 from four overs.

The Erratics lost more wickets (including Simon Orpen who can perhaps count himself unfortunate) and the game was looking all but lost at 72-7 when ... Al arrived. Whatever made him late made him angry. This in turn made him take it out on the ball which made it the Nomad's turn to spend some time looking for the ball in the long grass - an activity that Errratics had spent a long time engaged in while Barnet was at the crease. As we got to the last few overs the lost cause was turning into a possibility. The scoreboard seemed to have been on 59-5 for about 10 overs as it didn't seem worth bothering with, but now suddenly the Nomads were looking to it as it seemed as if the Erratics might just get there.

Alas, it was not to be. Al finished the innings on 48 not out with a head-height six into the pavilion that (with ricochet) could have necessitated an ambulance and created selection problems for Sunday.

Still, it was indeed a proper 20-20 with Brunt and Ellis sharing 82 for the 9th wicket and, in the end, only falling 9 runs short of victory. A very good game of cricket.
