About a ball game
The game is called cricket
Cricket is its name

We are called the Erratics
But our game is not the worst
To Dunsford we went
And Dunsford went in first

Nigel’s six overs – one wicket for eight
Ben’s six overs – one wicket for nine!
Jeff and Jim’s six overs – one wicket for more
And Chris’ six overs – four wickets for nine!

Dunsford scored seventy, seventy for nine
The Erratics bowled well on a sticky wicket
[In thirty overs, only seventy for nine]
And then we had tea – a big part of cricket!

We had quiche and cake and cake and tea
And sarnies and cake and cake and more tea
The Dunsford clouds then rolled over the wicket
The wicket where we were playing our cricket

Then Dunsford bowled well on the sticky wicket
The Erratics rolled over: twenty-nine for four!
Before Chris and his bat scored this way and that
And Peter scored more with singles galore.

Thank you to Dunsford, such a nice cricket team
Thank you Chris and Siva, you stood and you sat
As we played the game, the game we called cricket,
Or “the bat and the chat”, … not the cat in the hat!


Theodor Geisel died on this day, 24 September, in 1991.
Writing under the pen name of Dr Seuss, he selected just 220 different words from which to compose the whole of The Cat in the Hat. It took me some 90 words just to write these few lines, but then it did only take me thirty minutes (not two years) and I do not expect it to “transform the nature of primary education” in quite the way that The Cat in the Hat did.
