Cullompton Codgers v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 20 Aug 2017 at 2.00pm
Match was Abandoned due to rain
Match report
When the first ball of the game - bowled on a perfectly respectable line and length by Ben Youngman - was dispatched back over his head for a towering straight six, it felt like it would be a long afternoon. It wasn't - the rain made sure of that.
It started drizzling as we made our way up the M5, and by the time we got to the ground it was falling steadily, with heavier stuff forecast. Still, our hosts were more than willing to get wet if we were mad enough to want to try and get a game in. We were - Martin Wright would have been proud of us - although the format was revised to a standard 20 over game.
Despite hammering us in a T20 fixture earlier in the season our hosts were in no mood to go easy, and some impressively brutal hitting had them at 150ish after just 12 overs. Still, we dug in well, despite you narrator and skipper having one of those ground-please-swallow-me-up performances with both ball in hand and, indeed, with ball-not-staying-in-hands, and some wily bowling from Ferro 'n' Phil in horrible damp conditions applied the breaks, and our hosts finished with a formidable 190.
Danny played a nice aggressive cameo, Ben A and Krups looked good, but from the start of our reply it was raining the proverbial cats and dogs. Our hosts gallantly bowled on for 7 overs before sense prevailed and we knocked it on the head, taking refuge in the club house with scones and a much needed brew.
So, we had managed to get some cricket in on an afternoon when Mother Nature gave us no right to, and that was something. It was also a pleasure to see umpire Jonny Hayes, who likes to umpire an Erratics game each summer on his annual Devon holiday (you may have met him in previous years at Newton Pop or Mount Edgcumbe). To give up a day of his holiday to stand in the pouring rain and officiate for us - a powerful symbol of how much some of us love this silly old game. Thanks Jonny, and hope to see you in better weather next year!
