Match report Danny Williamson reports...

Sometimes I feel like I’m part of the Harry Potter universe. Setting off with Fraser to collect the talismanic mystery that is Nick Walding and looking for 14 Unicorn Street was one of these times. Would we see owls on the telegraph wires? Would Nick’s guardians let him out of the under-stairs cupboard? Reality can often be duller than you imagine, so too with our T20 batting performance in this fixture, but we’ll get there…

Nick collected and the three of us on the road, the time came to quiz our selector on the team sheet. Was George Greaves playing, he had been down? No! Greaves had been replaced by Cockburn, but our net George was in tact. It was pointed out that though ∆George = 0, ∇George may not be, though if the units of t were days, the equations would remain pretty… Unlike our batting performance (we’ll get there).

Upon arrival, skipper Ferro kept the result of the toss to himself and we took to the field to bowl at Newton Poppleford. After a huge first ball beamer called no ball, Nick’s first official ball of the first over pitched on a good length, swung away, took an edge to first slip and keeper Krups dived and took it one handed. Such spectacular antics were typical in a fielding performance that was peppered with highlights amidst a big hitting-boundary finding batting performance by Newton Poppleford. Siva opened from the other end and bowled a good line and length, but the batsmen were in 6 hitting mood, and anything in the slot went quickly to the boundary. George took over from Nick and kept it tight early, before the batsmen went after him too, with Fraser at the other end also being picked off. It was around this point in the game that the batsmen drove powerfully to a gap in extra cover and began running. Swooping into the gap was “Claws” Crawford (his fielding nickname), collecting and then clattering the stumps from 60 yards away for a professional run out! The Erratics were always in it!

“Trebs” Crawford (his bowling nickname) came on for 4 overs, picking up 2 nice leg stump bowled wickets, and Fraser turned the screw at his end and a spectacular dual with a particular NP batsmen ending bowled. Ferro and Waldo came on to bowl the death. Claws took a great catch on the boundary off of Nick, but then carried it over for 6, and Ferro managed to get a stumping (though the scorecard disagrees). As I remember it, the batsmen missed and it went past Krups, who then turned, collected it and threw the stumps down from 10 yards (fine not really a stumping, but wk run outs should have their own category). I think it was fair to say that we fielded well and there were some special moments, but Newton Poppleford had piled into 178 runs and looked favourite. Could we match their batting performance?

In a word, no.

It began in promising fashion, with opener Fraser launching a monster 6 and 2 4’s, but the bowling was quick and accurate and as Newton Pop strangled the rate, they also began to take wickets. Fraser was first, bowled for 19 by a nasty fast and swinging delivery. I joined other opener Martin Wright, who had a lovely boundary early on, but was out caught for 9 trying to move the rate on. Every one of us struggled to find the free flowing form of the Newton Poppleford innings, but it was the wickets that flowed freely. Krups departed caught for 8, before new recruit Jack Heslop, who claims to have never played before his only other outing for the Erratics absolutely creamed a backfoot cover drive for 4 first ball! I think Jack will provide some entertaining innings in the future. Unfortunately, his next shot was caught, bringing out the skip, who told me to “just keep going”… It seems I didn’t listen, as I was soon out top edging to slip for 20, bringing the entertaining Nick Walding to the crease. Nick played conservatively for a couple of overs, leaving and blocking… (only kidding!) No Nick went after the bowlers and hit an almost 6 4 whilst running quick 1’s and 2’s. Ferro clipped a catch to mid-off and Matt (he doesn't have a batting nickname yet) Crawford was caught for just 2.

The Errati-collapse was in full swing, but there was entertainment left yet. Mark Phillips joined Waldo at the crease and looked sharp, driving a good ball for a couple, before clipping the ball along the ground towards the man at extra cover. Nick, screamed yes and charged towards Mark, but the cool Phillips jogged back to his end and ensured that the pecking order was clearly established. “I’ll not run myself out for thee son, come back when you’ve organized 60 odd fixtures a season over a period of many years” may have been uttered, but probably by someone on the boundary, not by gentleman Phillips. George joined and got a lovely driven 4 before Mark was caught and Siva was bowled, ending the Erratics innings after only 17.2 overs and 4 shy of 100. Our opponents bowled very well.

So it was on to the pub, which turned out to be a total sausage fest and, accompanied by chips, there was plenty to go around. It was dark when we arrived at back at Unicorn street. A black cat walked in front of the car. Was that an owl or a wood pigeon across the street? I can’t be sure. Probably the duller of the two…
