Ashburton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 03 Jul 2019 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 25 Runs

Match report The Erratics started the season in pretty sluggish T20 form winning just two of our first eight games in the short format. But something seems to have stirred on the North Devon tour with three out of four T20 wins. This upward trajectory was continued with a fine win at Ashburton .

On a beautiful evening on the edge of Dartmoor we were delighted to welcome back two Erratics who have been spending more time with the NHS than on the cricket field. Pete Colclough looked very chipper post heart bypass surgery and was supping a pint to prove the point. He hopes to be back on the field soon. Andrew Forester has been having his heart monitored closely but felt good enough to make his season’s debut.

Skipper Ben Youngman won the toss and elected to bat. He would have liked to have fielded but several players were late! The Erratics top order opted for high sacrifice in a clever move to get the home side’s main strike bowler removed from the attack. After three balls we were 0-2 and at the end of the over that was it for the wicket taker as Ashburton feared only having to chase single figures.

Chris Ferro (Retired 33) and Krupakar Nallala (12) steadied the ship before some fabulous stroke play by Connor Johnson-Goodier (Retired 30) and George Greaves (18 not out) took us to a once seemingly unlikely 131-5.

Connor’s 30 came off just 17 balls and included four 4s and a giant six over long on. Chris Ferro was impressed but still felt there was room for improvement. “I think Connor could have aimed to hit it through the open door of the shed rather than over the roof”.

Special mention must also be made of Simon Burrell who was the glue that stuck the innings together. Despite probably also in need of the NHS (broken toe, tennis elbow and side strain) he made a dogged 25, all the more remarkable as it entirely consisted of ones and twos. Nine 2s in fact.

There then followed one of the best fielding performances I have seen from the Erratics in quite some time. Great catches were taken – two high swirlers by Jack Heslop, a diving effort by Fraser Chave and a quite outstanding’s skippers catch by Ben on the boundary to remove the home danger man. Andrew pouched one behind the stumps to cement his return. Ground fielding was superb too with several direct hits and near misses.

This all backed up some tight bowling with Connor (2-12), Krupakar (3-25)and Fraser (2-14) doing the damage as Ashburton failed to keep up with the required rate and fell short at 106-7.

The game was played in a great spirit and it is really encouraging to see a Club like Ashburton in such good shape with a thriving colts section providing several players for this game. They have an impressive Clubhouse where we enjoyed an after match drink – even offering a debit card reader for payments and wifi. All signs of a forward looking Club helping keep cricket to the fore in their community.
