Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 10 Runs

Match report Alex Thomas reports...

Another warm Sunday afternoon, another lovely setting in the beautiful Devon countryside. Chulmleigh’s ground is quirky to say the least. The entrance slalom is unusual. The ground has a steep bank on 75% of the boundaries, with ball-swallowing hedges (not unlike Ide in many ways) meaning that there was a constant need for search parties. The longer grass in the outfield added to the quirkiness.

This high scoring game will be remembered for some big hitting on both sides.
The scorecard reads as a succession of fours and sixes, certainly helped by the dimensions of the pitch. This consistent hitting made it an entertaining watch, with most batsmen able to get themselves “in”, then dealing exclusively in boundaries, picking to hit the bad balls.

Chulmleigh won the toss and chose to bat. It certainly felt like a series of “What If” moments that didn’t go our way.
- Rob’s wonderful ball smashed into off stump but was a narrow no ball.
- My dropped catch off Fraser’s bowling; it went through fingers and beat me to the fence for four runs. My fielding was not great throughout but that felt like a really significant missed opportunity. It was a big miss as the second wicket partnership combined to put on a massive score.
- Difficult chances in the field could not be taken and when shots were mistimed, the ball would fall between two or three fielders.
- In an inning that featured a lot of graft, Jack’s performance deserves highlighting. He was a willing runner across the field and did some excellent boundary fielding. He took two tough catches, the second was a great juggling act.

The innings ended slightly prematurely when Rithvik injured his finger. It would have been a tremendous stop had he been able to take it but it was driven with real power. The home team finished with 268. A very good score, by any measure.

What must have been a regular sight over the summer, a lovely tea with plenty keenly following TMS on the radio.

The Erratics innings got off to a good start with Fraser and Krups. Both would be gutted to not push on but put on 50 nearly all the first wicket. It was the start that was needed.
Jack got a good ball to put the bowler on a hat-trick. Chulmleigh were suddenly on the up.

Si and Duncan proceeded to attack, sensing that we had to attack to save the game, pushing up the run rate to reach the score target. Their shots were hit with verve, stylish and powerful, accurate yet comfortable. These two weren’t really tested by the rotation of bowlers, including 21 runs off the first off of one over. The slow bowlers took a pounding in the middle overs, forcing a serious rethink from the home team.

This partnership had impacted on the scoring rate so Chulmleigh were delighted to get Duncan out on 76 when getting a ton seemed just as likely. Si looked confident for his 81 mixing his familiar driving with big hitting when offered space and time.

My arrival slowed the run rate & marked the beginning of the end. I got out on 1, when the bowler rolled his fingers over one that stuck in the pitch. It popped up with top spin straight to the close fielder to take an easy catch off my flat bat.

Martin and then Mark came in and tried to reinvigorate the push and did well to get close, which gave Chulmleigh serious food for thought. Ultimately to finish the innings eleven short of the target was disappointing but we showed mettle to get close.
