Cheriton Fitzpaine v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 24 Jun 2021 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won 7 Wickets

Match report Visit 21 for me to Cheriton Fitzpaine Cricket Club (CFCC), since my first in June 2015. I think I've driven each time, and always wonder 'what's the best way to CFCC?', which, do note, is a different question from 'what's the best way to Cheriton Fitzpaine village proper?'. Anyway, trip 21 saw me me go via Crediton, taking the A377, then the A3072. This has become my route of choice, having progressed from the 'over Langaton top' rural route to 'via Bickleigh'. Soon after taking the A3072, I was in a train of vehicles led by a hay-carrying tractor. I turned what could have been frustration to my advantage, as in front of me was Mark Hailwood, skipper for the day, who made no attempt to acknowledge me, but I didn't mind because he would become 'datum'. After the tractor had turned off, a Morrison's lorry became train leader. Soon after that, Mark turned off for Cheriton Fitzpaine village proper. I, on the other hand, carried on the A3072, behind the lorry, and eventually turned off at Cadbury. I then navigated a pot-hole ridden stretch of road, before arriving at CFCC, at least a couple of minutes before Mark "I've never had to stop for so much traffic coming the other way" Hailwood arrived.

The purpose of going to CFCC was not to conduct a remarkably robust scientific experiment: it was to play cricket. And we did, having lost the toss. CFCC batted. Hailwood and I opened the bowling, and were both soon taken off (Hailwood 2-0-2-0; Youngman 2-2-0-1) and replaced by Curtis and Crawford, respectively. Curtis (4-0-32-2) missed a hat-trick opportunity (for the second time in as many games, if memory serves me correctly) while Crawford maintained frugality (4-2-10-0). Siva (4-0-20-1) and Krups (4-0-24-2) closed the bowling, with CFCC finishing on 107 for 7. The remaining wicket, a run out, was probably due to Crawford, if we take the mode.

Erratics chased the 107 with three balls to spare, but didn't make light work of it. Opener Kirby (4 c&b) was soon back in the pavilion, and then Rutherford (batting at 3, caught for 11), Krups (at 4) and Weiler (at 5) struggled to get the ball away. Other opener Beverley (33, retired not out), meanwhile, found the boundary with sufficient frequency. With 11 needed off the last over, it looked as if 107 would prove too much. Krups, though, ran a two off the first ball, and then hit the next two balls for six over long on, into the tree in the next field up the hill. A win with three balls to spare.

My datum for my return journey swapped from skipper Hailwood to a Tesco delivery van. From this we deduce that Tesco delivery vans use the A3072 and A377 when returning to Exeter. They do not appear to be in a hurry to get back.

Ben Youngman.
