Match report Ottery St Mary v Erratics Cricket Club
Sun 15 May 2022
At: Ottery St Mary

Village cricket at its best!! On a drizzly Sunday afternoon with overcast conditions Cap. Jonathan Kirby won the toss and decided to Bat first. As the teams were about to start the proceedings the clouds opened with heavy showers delaying the scheduled start by 30 minutes. Some Erratics were toying with the idea of calling it an early Tea, a Pint and driving back home. As the rain settled, Captains agreed for a shortened game of 35 overs a side. On a nippy and zippy damp surface, Chave Sr and Chave Jr opened the batting for Erratics and negotiated the new ball well. Chave Sr, coming back from an injury to his Achilles, cut and drived the ball with fluency before he got out to a Jaffa. Tim McMath later joined Chave Jr and ground down the opposition by manoeuvring the fielders cleverly. So strong was Tim’s offside play, the opposition team packed all their fielders on the offside to stop leaking easy 1’s and some hard earned 2’s. The only 6 of the Erratic’s innings came when Chave Jr pulled one through the mid-wicket region out of the fairly small ground on one side. Once Chave Jr got out to a tired shot, Mr President joined his old mate Tim on the 22 yards and tried upping the ante in the end overs. But soon Mr President, JK, Andrew and Nigel found out it’s hard to get going on the word go on this bowler friendly pitch and ECC ended with 139 in their allotted quota of 35 overs.

With 140 required of 35 overs at 4 runs per over, Ottery sent their young guns to set the tone for the chase and our willy Cap JK asked our own young gun Oscar to share the new ball with our own young‘man Ben. Oscar making full use of the overcast conditions and new ball in hand ripped through both the openers in his exceptional double wicket first over. With Ben meeting the challenge with a banana ball which curved from outside the leg stump to dip and hit the bottom of the leg stump to send back the shell-shocked opposition no.4 packing. There were quite few tough catches dropped as the opposition started going Bang… Bang… Bang… trying to chase the target before the forecasted rain comes in. In the process, Ottery lost a bunch of wickets to Chave Jr, Rithvik, Nigel and Anuj. With 40 required from some 10 or so overs at the end, Erratics needed 2 wickets to wrap up the game. But Ottery’s no.10 (D Gleeson), who looked like a very young chap played some solid backfoot and frontfoot defence to counter our shrewd Cap JK’s plenty of smart and tactical field placements, but Erratics just couldn’t get the breakthrough they needed. Ottery’s no.9 (M Jeacock) rotated the strike with an occasional boundary here and there to win a very competitive yet friendly Sunday afternoon game.

Ottery provided tea (special mention to the brownies) which reminded everyone of the good old golden days pre-2020. Mr. President thanked the opposition by kindly and gracefully fertilizing some trees on the outfield post tea break.
