Clyst St George v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 26 Apr 2014 at 2.00pm
Match was Abandoned Rained off at tea

Match report Great changes are sweeping across the world of cricket as the 2014 home season begins. Among the questions which will be asked, and answered, this summer, is whether the team can survive the loss of one of its most talented, exciting and enigmatic figures … a player known for his changing room tantrums (allegedly) … a player who is always capable of turning a match on his own … a player who has now left these shores for the glitz and glamour of the Indian Premier League. Sorry, that should read Estonian Premier League: Matt, and Triin, you will both be greatly missed!

Moores and Fabrace may think they’ve got a daunting job ahead of them, but imagine if new owners of Trent Bridge, Lords, Old Trafford, Headingley and The Oval decided that Notts, Middlesex, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Surrey could continue to play on these grounds, but that the England team was no longer welcome? The loss of the Erratics’ ‘home’ ground at Dunsford is a sad blow, (and leaves me beginning this first report of the summer by having to consult our fixture list to check whether this was a home match or an away match). We will miss our delightful ground; the vagaries of a ‘proper’ wicket to bowl and bat on; the cooling effects of paddling in the Teign; the luxurious amenities of the pavilion(?) and the warm welcome from all at the Royal Oak. And so, in a strange twist of fate, the ‘homeless’ Erratics have become Nomads (which could prove confusing in our next fixture).

Clyst St George will kindly be lending us their ground for several of our home matches this season, but for today’s opening match of 2014, the Erratics were the visitors. A pre-season injury in training to Dan Thistlethwaite left the Erratics one player short, but Clyst graciously loaned Duncan Chave back to the Erratics, who were already fielding several Clyst regulars. Despite morning showers, and another very short one on the stroke of two o’clock, the Erratics took the field as scheduled, having negotiated the loan of keeper’s pads for Andrew Forrester … I promised our captain, Jonathan “Kit” Kirby, not to mention who it was who forgot to bring the Erratics kit.

Nigel Rutherford and Varun Kothamachu opened the attack with tight and aggressive bowling. Rutherford struck in his second over, and returned excellent figures of 1 for 9 off his first spell of 6 overs. Kirby made a double change, bringing on Harry Molins, who bowled really well and was unlucky not to take a wicket, and Mark Hailwood, who provided the breakthrough the Erratics needed. With the score on 58 he dismissed Cooper for 16 and Read and Du Buisson for ducks, courtesy of clean catching by Lucky Bandhu, Rutherford, and Chave who ran backwards from slip to take a well-judged top edge. Kirby captained actively, adjusting the field, mixing up the bowling attack and always fielding reliably. At one end he brought on Phil Power who trapped Athwater – this time a one-handed catch for Chave – just as he was looking really threatening, and at the other end he tried Bandhu, Jeff Haynes and Chave. However, Chris Ferro (batting for Clyst on this occasion), and Paul Laverick, both settled into their stride and despatched anything loose effectively to the boundary. To their credit, the Erratics kept to their task, Krupakar Nallala and Molins both impressive in the field, but the Clyst middle-order pair had put on 83 before Rutherford, returning to the attack, captured both their wickets, trapping Ferro leg-before for 38 and clean bowling Laverick for a fine 52. The persistent high winds eventually and inevitably led to the return of light drizzle at just after four and by tea, at a quarter to five, the Erratics returned to the pavilion damp in body, but not in spirit, having contained Clyst St George to 171 for 8.

With each sip of tea the sky grew darker and the rain intensified, and when tea was complete the captains had no choice but to abandon the match to the elements.

Hailwood and Rutherford shared the bowling honours this day, but there were other good performances with the ball and all around in the field. We will have to wait a little longer to see how the Erratics will begin the season with the bat … though the signs from Ferro were encouraging.
