Match report
This rather wet and windy game started with one of the stranger pre-match conversations with an opposition skipper that I've been part of in my time with the Erratics - what to do with the swarm of bees that had taken home on a corner of the ground, between fine leg and deep square leg. Despite attempts from members of the opposition to roll balls through the swarm (all of which missed), common sense ended up prevailing and an emergency bee-keeper (the twelfth emergency service?) was called in to save the day - doing some rather sterling work with the game already underway.
For those who haven’t played there before, the track at Newton St Cyres is a lovely one for bowlers when the ball is new; thanks to the genuine pace and bounce it offers. With that in mind, I opted to field and open with Harry from the playground end; in the hope that he'd repeat his magic from the last time I remembered Molins Jnr playing there. Sadly Harry's footwear was causing him all manner of problems today (note to Molins Snr – buy your son some astro cricket shoes!), meaning he was winging his run up somewhat. As a result the extras column saw a touch saw more action than the batsmen who in Harry’s defence were genuinely struggling to cope with the sting his straighter ones were offering. I decided to have a bash from the other end and opted for a slightly shorter length that the opener found almost waspish, resulting in the No.2 edging a catch that flew into the ever safe hands of Andrew Forrester. A bowling change saw Molins replaced by the wily Haynes, but despite the honey traps he set for the Crediton batsmen, a few boundaries got away to keep their run rate ticking over at a more than respectable rate. At the other end, the other opener fell to a fuller length ball from myself, which then led to a droning battle between me and their number four - largely based around me bowling outside his off stump and him missing or edging things down towards third man.
Harry eventually got the reward his bowling deserved following a change of ends, with Sophie swooping to take a beautiful catch – one made even better when considering quite how damp the ball was and how treacherous the conditions underfoot were by this point. Harry, Sophie and Jeff did a good job at trying to contain the now rampant No.3, who was starting to consistently strike the ball with real venom. At the other end, their skipper played a masterful twenty over innings; constantly finding gaps in the field and pollen out all the stops to keep the scoreboard ticking over. It was left to Nigel to bowl the final spell, offering a real masterclass in how to bowl a final over of a twenty over game.
With 143 to chase, we knew things were going to be difficult but we beelieved in ourselves when embarking on our innings. Indeed, that belief was warranted for the first third of our innings; with the run rate very much in hand – even though we lost Martin Weiler and Andrew to particularly good deliveries. However, those wickets continued to crumble like an old honeycomb – thanks to some nagging bowling members of the opposition attack and a swarming fielding presence that prevented ones being turned into twos. Guy (17) and Martin Wright (17) deserve much praise for the initial progression, running aggressively and finding gaps that others struggled to exploit on a consistent basis. Sadly, once they departed we saw an Erratic collapse to rival many others. Indeed, we lost our last six wickets for just 40 – over half of which came from a superb cameo from Nigel (24). Extras managed to do a good job for us towards the end, finishing as our second highest scorer of the evening. The final wicket stand between Jeff and Sophie showed a backbone that was lacking with much of our batting, with Sophie in particular impressing in resisting the opposition’s remaining bowlers. Sadly, our final wicket fell just before the end and we ended up some way short of their total.
After the match, drinks were had in the ever lovely Crediton Inn – with a view to putting up an improved performance next time out.
