Erratics Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Last autumn, I was reliably informed by Chris Ferro and may have unreliably remembered that we won 60% of our afternoon games last season and lost 60% of our evening games. Given that this was the seventh Twenty20 game that we had played so far this season and that we had lost the previous six, we were due a win. Under the serene captaincy of Mark Hailwood we duly achieved it, in true Erratic style, contriving to win by 5 wickets with 1 ball remaining when any other team might have been expected to romp home with ease, chasing 85 on a perfectly reasonable wicket.

Every Erratic bowled or batted. Even Mark Phillips, who as 12th man had turned up more in hope of recruiting for Saturday’s game than in expectation of playing, managed to get a spot of fielding in, Daniel Thistlethwaite having obligingly arrived late. The game was played in a friendly, competitive way. It was a glorious summer evening and the cackle of magpies was matched by the fierce bark of the Weiler calling for another run. And at the last, our captain joined Daniel at the crease and they scampered 2 runs followed by an improbable single to secure victory when all three results had been distinctly possible. Excellent.

It has to be said that we bowled and fielded really well. Molins & Son opened the attack, and while Harry was frugal, Paul kept some interest in the game for the Nomads with tantalising flight and guile. There was some controversy over the dismissal of our nemesis Pete Vukusic, with “no ball” shouted loud and clear from the boundary by a bevvy of back-seat umpires who had apparently grown frustrated at umpire John Curtis’ indifference to Harry’s alleged repeated over-stepping. But on we went, and if Messrs Molins contained the Nomads, Nigel Rutherford and Simon Wilmot positively strangled them, with spells that redefined parsimony, combined with 3 wickets between them.

For some reason, Jeff Haynes’ bowling figures are missing from the scorebook. I remember that he was greeted with a 4 and two 6s from his first three deliveries, courtesy of the belligerent “Llew”, freshly released from the Rutherford shackles, but I also remember him holding his nerve, recovering well and taking at least one wicket. I’m only sorry not to be able to report more accurately. “Llew” was run out after scoring a violent 32, by a brilliant piece of fielding from Simon Willmot, who hit the stumps from distance. From then on, the Nomads struggled to score, and several batsmen played over the top of straight ones that kept low, giving Mark Hailwood 3 wickets and meaning we had a very reasonable total to chase.

Kirby, Rutherford and Hayes all scored briskly and threatened to settle but didn’t. Tight bowling cut the flow of runs and increased the run-rate, but a steady partnership of 39 between Weiler and Forrester looked to have put things back on track until Weiler missed a straight one.

When Forrester faced the first ball of the last over, we still needed 3 to win. Bowler Nicholls, however, had found his stride. Forrester played and missed – nearly. Keeper and close fielders went up in loud appeal and Forrester walked without hesitation, which is just as well because the umpire couldn’t be sure he’d heard anything. But that brought the serene Hailwood to the crease, and the rest you know already.
