Match report Match Report: Greg Richmond

A very pink match ball stood out on a damp and overcast evening. Having been put into bat on bouncy pitch, the Erratics made a good start with Jonathan Kirby hitting some trademark shots backward of square on both sides of the wicket and Chris Ferro his usual calm and skillful presence at the crease. Retirement at 25 saw Jonathan back to the pavilion, bringing in Guy Clarke, who hit some sweetly timed shots, before also retiring having crossed the 25 mark.

This brought in Ed Keedwell, who appeared to pursue an active policy of exasperating the opposition by hitting the ball in the air, with considerable spin, inches out of reach of a succession of fielders. After Chris become the third retiree, Matt Cook brought some powerful hitting to the tail end of the Erratics innings, hitting un unbeaten 27. The final total of 147 looked like a challenging one.

Penny Price opened the bowling for Erratics and made an early breakthrough as the NP opener hit the ball hard and high some distance from the fielder at long off. It was the kind of chance that you don't really expect to be held, but Chris Ferro took the catch comfortably. Penny followed that up with a fine clean bowled for the second wicket. Some powerful hitting from Clay and Chaplin saw the run rate accelerate dramatically, leaving NP needing just 68 to win off the last 12 overs.

Ed Keedwell took a couple of important wickets but NP remained favourites. It took a fine spell of spin bowling from Matt Cook to bring the scoring rate down and a flurry of wickets, including a nicely judged catch by Mark Philips at mid off. (Editor's Note: Matt's spell was brilliantly complemented by 3 very tight, fine overs bowled by Greg Richmond, though he is too modest to note this himself.) This flurry of wickets brought Clay and Chaplin back to the crease, where they resumed their powerful hitting.

Off the final two overs NP needed 13 to win with one wicket to fall. Chris Ferro took the penultimate over. For all that Clay and Chaplin had been playing well, Chris' over proved very hard for them. Pace and bounce saw the ball fly repeatedly past the outside edge. The only scoring shot of note was the one that caught the edge, which flew high towards the keeper. Had the keeper been a bouncy 6ft 7" he may have got a hand to it - Jonathan has plenty of bounce, but is not quite there yet on the 6ft 7", and the ball flew far over his head for 4

Gareth took captain's responsibility for the final over, with 6 runs needed to win. Some accurate bowling left 3 to win, and 2 to tie, off the last ball, which brought plenty of drama. It was hit to a deepish midwicket where Matt Cook aimed a swift return to the keeper seeking a run out before they could complete the second run - the ball hit the returning batsman and deflected off towards third man. In the heat of the moment, the NP batsmen recieved rather more advice to the effect that they should not run a third than they needed. Two runs were taken - match tied.
