Match Report by James Burrows:

Another fine afternoon for a game of cricket with just a few clouds in the sky and the sun making frequent appearances, albeit low and bright enough for the opening batsman to ask to have it moved before he faced the first ball.

Work has been done on the square this winter and it shows, a firm surface with a good covering of grass promised to be sporting but fair. It played pretty true and I think it fair to say that the low scores were down to the quality of the bowling from both sides.

I’m not sure who won the toss but we began our afternoon in the field, which was fortunate for me as the tea turned out to be one of the best I’ve ever come across. I opened and at the other end the weekend’s second debutante blew away 14 years of cobwebs and threatened to do the same to the Dunsford upper order. Nigel Rutherford certainly looks sharper in the fresh air than in the nets, where he is no slouch, and the ball was swinging and cutting in and cramping the batsmen who were unable to unleash anything other than the odd dabble into the near leg side. For the second time this weekend we were reminded how applying pressure to the openers will lead to rash stroke play and the sense that a breakthrough is imminent. I was certainly surprised to take the first wicket, and we were on our way with only seven on the board. It was no surprise that Nigel got the next wicket, and it was probably the key one, as it was Martin Sharland’s. However I was very surprised that Nigel did not take any more wickets in an excellent 8 over spell.

Nigel was replaced by Gareth whose first challenge was to overcome the damage caused to various parts of his body by his exertions in the nets. I’m beginning to think he could develop a sideline creating a muscle balm brand as he seems to get through a substantial quantity each season. Anyway, after a couple of overs the pain seemed to have eased and his radar was reconnected. At the same time Simon took over at the other end. This was just as well, Dunsford had somehow eased from 16 for 2 to the mid seventies and the game was beginning to drift in their favour. At this point Gareth struck and removed their obdurate opener. There followed a brief recovery and they moved from 78 to 101 before Simon opened the floodgates. Both he and Gareth finished with 3 a piece, Phil got another and the final batsman was run out in Penny’s third over following some sharp work by Sid. Final mentions should go to Chris Mellett who was excellent in the field and Sid who was involved in four of the wickets, taking two catches and a stumping to add to the run out.

As previously mentioned the tea was of the highest order and one end of the table was groaning under the weight of sandwiches and tarts, the other was full of a variety of homemade sweet treats including a selection of light-as-a-feather sponge cakes.

Our innings was opened by Chris Mellett and Sid. Unfortunately Chris was unable to improve on his previous day’s score. Sid on the other hand led our innings from the front with a combination of careful defence and precise stroke play.

Nigel and Guy were soon back in the pavilion and when Martin Weiler joined Sid at the crease the run rate accelerated. Their partnership was worth 58 and we were just 2 short of our hundred when Sid was caught on 45. Our nerves were somewhat rattled when Martin was out for 39 with the score on 118. Though wickets continued to fall steadily a series of small contributions and plenty of byes meant we were moving towards our target, we had overs to spare if we could just make sure each wicket counted for 5 or so runs. The game was in the balance when a rash shot from Gareth brought our captain Simon to the crease.

The scorebook seems to suggest I played out a maiden, or maybe I just missed six deliveries. This meant Simon was now on strike, clearly unimpressed by my use of my new bat and not being one for the formalities of life he promptly swiped the first delivery away for two before swatting the second for 4 and we reached 148 with the best part of four overs to spare. This is just as well as it meant we were able to enjoy the last of the evening sun in the garden of the Royal Oak.
