Tale Millers v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 12 Jul 2017 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report My main memories of previous trips to Tale Millers were of a small ground, long and thin in shape, with one very short boundary and a quirky wicket. Last year’s main quirk was a prominent offset in the creases marked at each end. Creases this year were nicely in line. A rather green square with an indiscernible wicket was this year’s visible quirk. And, having spent last Friday at Branscombe, the ground seemed to have grown. Boundaries had also become fairly even. However, the ground presumably won’t expand eastwards as it’s bounded by the River Tale, in which Matt Crawford and Fraser were later able to paddle while ball finding. Nor, I suspect, is the ground likely to ever coexist with Tuck Mill – now just a memory, but whose existence was confirmed by past Erratic and today’s umpire, John Somers.

Gareth Oughton was our skipper for the evening, in what is expected to be one of his last games for the Erratics as an Exeter dweller. Let’s hope for a few cameo appearances, though. As Erratics went out to bat, it became apparent that the wicket had not revealed all of its quirks: a variable bounce greeted openers Jonathan Kirby and Matt Crawford, and fairly soon claimed Matt’s wicket; Jonathan’s shortly followed. Mark Phillips, Nick Walding, Ben Youngman, Gareth and Gareth (who filled Jeff Haynes’ last ball non-striker-end spot) also had relatively short visits to the crease. Fortunately, Fraser Chave, Andrew Forrester, Krupakar Nallala and Chris Ferro all reached double figures, which led to a final total of 107. This was thought to be a bit low, but not hopeless.

Nick and Gareth brought early hope by keeping runs at bay with figures of 4-0-10-1 and 4-0-13-1, respectively. Jeff and Ben also added wickets, but sadly the wicket total nor the stifling of runs were proportional to the enthusiasm in Jeff’s appeals. Tale Millers kept the runs ticking over, and for a while there was hope as the run rate dropped. Eventually, though, a square six on the leg in the nineteenth over brought home their winning runs.

A barbecue seems to have become a custom after Tale Millers games. And it’s a welcome custom. This year ham, egg and chips was on offer. Next year, we hope to be back, perhaps to score a few more runs.
