Plymtree v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 29 May 2005 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by seven wickets
Match report
And so to Plymtree on the first really sunny day of this Erratic summer. Steve Berry captained and we fielded first. I’ve been told that I must without fail include the following horrific incident in my match report so here goes:
Simon Orpen fielding at square leg just behind the umpire swoops elegantly as the ball speeds his way “Bowler’s end, Bowler’s end” shouts Cook, Berry et al. Orpen’s brain and arm not being perfectly synchronised manage to throw the ball full speed straight at the Umpire (not five yards away) hitting him directly on the kneecap and felling him like a shot buffalo! An embarrassing incident and sure to be remembered post season –thankfully no lasting damage to the victim who went on to open the bowling for Plymtree!!
Now that’s over I can tell you about some excellent bowling from the Erratics, especially Abhay (8 overs,1 for 24) Carl Knappett (6 overs,3 for 35) Ed Thomas (5 overs, 2 for 22) and Chris Cook (6 overs 2 for 19) good supporting work from James Burrows, Simon Orpen and John Somers plus an excellent catch from Sam Cook supersub (on for Molins) meant that Plymtree were restricted to 183 off their 40 overs – a substantial total but certainly one that was realistically chaseable.
Chris Cook, Steve Berry and a one legged Paul Molins opened the Erratics’ reply. Molins did a passable imitation of Gordon Greenidge with an aggressive but painful (for him) 28 aided by his trusty runner Martin Weiler. Steve batted throughout most of the Erratics innings and he and Chris Cook (82 n.o) put on a superb century stand to take us to the brink of victory. Martin Weiler came out towards the end and matched Chris shot for shot as we crossed the finish line. An excellent first victory of the season!
