Match report
Ben Youngman reports...
It seemed a bit early in the year to be taking to the cricket field, but turned out a worthwhile---albeit slightly cold and wet---afternoon’s cricket.
After negotiation between captains Matt Cook and Chris Ferro (of Clyst), Erratics went out to bat for a timed game, led by Martin Wright and Duncan Chave. The slightly damp wicket presented challenges for both batters and bowlers throughout the game. Once Martin had settled, his boundary attempt was unfortunately met by Krupakar Nallala (of Clyst), taking a rather impressive catch. This brought Matt to the crease, who was eventually bowled, and then Fraser, who edged one to gulley. Meanwhile Duncan kept the Erratic runs going, and passed 50, before being caught on 68. Danny Williamson and Andrew Forrester, now at the crease, and aware of clock, went for aggressive run-scoring and brought up the Erratic 100. Philip Walker (A.N.Other) and Sankar Mariappan ended the Erratics innings, with Sankar being caught on the final ball, valiantly trying to add to the final total of 123.
Tea, prepared by Chris, fuelled the now fielding Erratics. Ben Youngman and Sankar opened the bowling. Sankar, who used the wicket to generate some challenging spin, was replaced by Sophie, whose now familiar brand of late inswing took the first wicket, with Clyst on 49, and soon after the second---and valuable---wicket of Krupakar. Fraser, now bowling from the other end, gave few opportunities for runs, which resulted in Clyst needing 67 of the final 20 overs. Fraser ended his ten-over spell on 2-20 and Jeff, bowling from the other end, on 1-13. With ten overs to go, Clyst needed 38. Philip Walker, bowling off spin, then added two wickets. With four overs to go, Clyst, with three wickets in hand, needed 21, and by the final over that, with Matt having taken their eighth wicket, was down to eight. Only three were scored though.
In no way was a draw anticlimactic: it seemed the correct result to quantify some good-quality, friendly, cold-at-times, wet-at-times, sunny-at-times, early-season cricket.
