Match report Ben Youngman reports...

We returned to Stokeinteignhead (S-in-T) for another timed game. At first our priority seemed to be beat our last score (which, by the way, was 37). Nature helped us in this task by providing blue skies, but hindered us with a fairly slow outfield and rather variable-bounce wicket.

It’s probably fair to say that a score of 38 or more would make an excellent anniversary present, and Duncan clearly thought so too. Opening, he led the march to pass 37, which took a slightly nervous 17 overs and three wickets: Martin, Phil and Krupakar, all succumbing to ones that `kept low’. Andrew and captaining Jonathan helped steady the ship, making respective partnerships of 41 and 34 with Duncan. Another low one took Danny’s wicket, before Fraser and Duncan added another 55 to the score. The run rate had ramped up, and once Duncan’s wicket fell for 107, and Mark and Ben had made short cameos at the end innings, Erratics had clocked up 182, where 182 > 37.

The tea in tea was particularly good.

Aiming for 183, S-in-T lost a quick wicket at the hand of Bernie, and reached 70 before the next: a dramatic overhead catch by Danny off Mark, which, keeping things SFW, `pleased’ our captain. Phil then took another wicket, perhaps benefiting from the Vorsprung durch Technik of ball-shining trousers. S-in-T’s 20 over countdown then kicked in with them needing 112 to win. Frugal, wicket-taking bowling by Danny, Fraser and Krupakar seemed to rule out the win for S-in-T. Our challenge went from 15 overs to take five wickets to 12 to take four; then seven to take three and three to take two. But, alas, some patient defending by S-in-T, in particular Roger, guided them to draw.

As we arrived at an open Wild Goose Inn, we’d clearly done something better this time. After congratulating ourselves, Annie and Duncan on their anniversary, and Jonathan on his captaincy, we signed off with a quick Erratic dance (which is like a rain dance, but it lacks dancing and its objective, instead of creating rain, is to yield precisely eleven available players for each match in June).
