Match report Gareth Oughton reports...

Well, this was rather a chastening experience. For the sake of the bowlers, I'll gloss over the majority of the details. All I'll say is a reliable artificial track, a short boundary on the leg side, a rapid outfield, bowling the entirety of their innings from one end of the ground and a number of heavy hitting batsmen (most of whom favoured shots to the aforementioned short leg side boundary) made for some very nasty figures.

Credit to Ben Youngman for picking up three wickets against quality opposition like this and to Nick for consistently troubling the batsmen with pace and bounce in some good areas outside off stump. Mark Hailwood's return of 1-1 shouldn't be glossed over either; offering control and variety in his four balls before the opposition declared to give us a vague chance of batting in the light.

With 180 scored off just under 17 overs, we were always going to be up against it but Chris and Krups got our innings off to a stylish start, scoring at a healthy rate. Chris' classic shot selection saw several fours stylishly chalked up, along with some strong hitting and flicks from Krups. The latter was sadly judged to be leg before when a little way down the track, falling short of what would have been a deserved 35.

Danny came in next, offering aggressive running; albeit a little too aggressive at times, boldly choosing to send Chris to the danger end against a fielder with a strong arm ("gamble with your own money, Danny" came Chris' less-than-impressed response). Nonetheless, he offered a range of attacking T20 strokes which kept the run rate up and brought him a quick-fire 14 before being caught.

The close of our innings was brought up with three excellent performances by Martin (stylish as ever), Mark (picking up where he left off against Marldon) and Nick (hard hitting and offering great promise for skippers with him in their side this season) - all of whom contributed good scores and looked comfortable against bowling opposition that will be as good as most sides we'll play this year. Their scores deserve additional attention due to the murky conditions that left us on the side wondering who it was on strike at any given point (you can find some pictures, courtesy of Martin Weiler, in the 'Photo Galleries', accessible via the menu on the left hand side of this page).

With that out of the system, we roll onto the T20 league next week, hoping for a better outcome than tonight.
