Crediton Inn v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 14 Jul 2016 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 9 runs

Match report Andrew Forrester reports...

As ever the Erratics arrived in plenty of time on a sunny evening whilst the opposition eventually located a handful of players and the second set of stumps from a locked shed. When we lost the toss and were asked to bowl first there were some anxious murmurs amongst us that we might be batting into a lowering sun behind one end. As it turned out the sun shone during their innings but was covered by a layer of cloud for ours.

Skipper Matt decided to open with Ben and Jeff and soon Ben got his reward for his accuracy with Andrew stumping the opener/skipper who was batting out of his crease even though the keeper was standing up! Then we struggled to make a breakthrough – their number three in particular hitting powerfully with a short back lift whoever bowled to him. The other opener played and missed more but stayed around for most of the innings. Their umpires were immovable when it came to LBW appeals – being a bouncy track some of these were understandable others less so! The bowlers involved will know what I mean!
The total at one point looked as if it could reach 150 but all the bowlers stuck to their guns and we restricted them to 133 a challenging but gettable target on a small ground.

Unfortunately we contrived to lose wickets at regular intervals – some rash shots, some done by the bounce and some powerful blows that found the fielder. And the run rate crept up inexorably. Andrew was having trouble timing it but eventually began to find the boundary rope and when Mark came out to join him they decided not to panic but to see if the 6 or 7 and over could be turned into 10 an over. For a couple of overs they managed this but sustaining it for 6 overs proved too much to ask. When Andrew was out, Mark continued to time the ball but the field was spread. Ben unleashed his trademark lofted straight drive and we fetched up short.

Over a drink and a generous amount of food in the pub was, we bemoaned the fact that if we had another over victory could have been ours. But then ‘What if… ?’ may not be the best philosophy in cricket or in life for that matter.

Author’s note (Andrew Forrester): Setting aside my usual modesty for a moment I was chuffed with my overall performance – keeping wicket on a bouncy track and playing an aggressive innings. My one regret was scoring too many twos – I needed an oxygen cylinder to help my recovery time between overs – when I asked Ben who was umpiring at the time if I could have a runner he went to signal to the boundary before I explained it was on the grounds of old age. Don’t think that is in the rules of cricket sadly.
