Lustleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 11 Jun 2017 at 2.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs
Match report
The annual John Lloyd Trophy match at Lustleigh rarely disappoints on or off the field and this was another memorable occasion.
Only Clyst St George have been more regular opponents in the Erratics’ 83 year old history.
Peter Thomson described Lustleigh as ‘our friendliest enemies’. Keith Salter in an after match speech once compared the civilised nature of the game with the deplorable state of the nation. Little has changed.
The setting is idyllic. “A lush meadow, fringed by oaks and beeches and a gently flowing brook, with great vistas of wooded hills beyond” (Stephen Fisher).
Some things have altered over the years. There is no longer a large Erratics camp in the field at the far end. And no village hog roast after the game. The old pavilion (featured on the front cover of the second Erratics book) is also long gone although Peter Colclough revealed that it still exists – standing in the garden of a keen cricketer in West Ogwell.
Doyens of past fixtures were there to keep watch Courtenay Wright and Len Harvey from Lustleigh and Peter Thomson from Erratics. Len, 74, still plays as does Ray Bartlett, now 80. Courtenay has turned to golf.
Inevitably old stories flowed especially talk of David Salter endlessly frustrating the home side as he blocked out for a draw. Len revealed that Lustleigh called him ‘Hayley’s comet’ as “he was only out twice a century”.
Erratics won the toss and elected to field in a timed game. Lustleigh were soon 3-2 as Youngman and Ferro struck. Bannister (79) steadied the ship and was the mainstay of the innings. When heavy rain sent the players scuttling off the home side were handily placed at 144-4.
The rain changed the pace of the wicket and it was harder to time after the downpour. Lustleigh faltered and were all out for exactly 200 scored off just 29 overs.
The batsmen were all going for hard lofted shots aiming to take advantage of the short boundary. This meant rapid scoring but every chance of a wicket as skied catches were taken by Hailwood, Wright, Kirby, Fraser Chave and Ferro. Kirby declared he had not dropped an outfield catch since at least 2014. No pressure now Jonathan!
Wickets were spread around notably Youngman 2-42, Hailwood 3-65, Fraser Chave 2-57 and Power 2-8.
There is dangerous talk of doing away with cricket teas. There would be little support here. Lustleigh provided a sumptuous spread enjoyed by all.
The Erratic reply never really got to grips with the conditions. Several got into double figures but couldn’t really kick on. Duncan Chave (19) hit a couple over the river giving Fraser the chance to prove his speedy ball recovery skills. Wright (16), Fraser (21) and Kirby (19) also contributed effectively.
Only Ferro mastered the situation hitting 6 sixes in his superb 65 not out. At one point it seemed as though he might single handedly win the game as Lustleigh tried nine different bowlers. But with the fielders in a ring around the boundary it was not easy.
The Erratics of old, well David Salter anyway, would have settled for a draw. The modern version kept going for an unlikely win and last man Youngman was out to skied catch with just three balls to spare and still 21 runs short.
Len Harvey awarded the virtual trophy (does anyone know where it is?) to Lustleigh and reflected on the game He said “It was played in such great spirit as it always has done since John Lloyd brought the Erratics here over 50 years ago”.

And this from Chris Ferro:
Len told me several other stories yesterday to add to the ones in
Martin's report.
* Peter O'Toole used to bring his cricket team, the Lazarusians, to play
at Lustleigh. More colour can be found on the following page, including
quotes from Steve Wright.

* Len used to hear Stephane Grappelli playing his violin while he (Len)
was walking to school and Grappelli was living in the village. Len's
mother warned him not to speak to that 'strange man', though.
* The wall at the end of the field was once swept away in a flood,
narrowly missing a group of people walking home from a village event.
The holes in the bottom of the wall now let flood waters drain away.
