Match report Nick Walding reports.

With the season beginning to draw to a close, this was to be the last Erratic T20 game of the year. And on the back of a close defeat the evening before by Baker’s XI, the Erratics were looking for a win! The rain had mainly held off during the day and just a whiff of cloud was obscuring the view from the pavilion over the river estuary. Although late in the season, this fixture saw John Curtis walk onto the field for the first time this year for the Erratics. It was a pleasure to meet John for the first time, with our Skipper Jonathan introducing me with the statement; ‘This is Nick, you’ll hear him a lot today’. Owing to the lateness in the season and light fading ever faster, it was decided that we would play a shortened-18 over game.

With Skipper JK [winning/losing?] the toss, we found ourselves in the field. Youngman started off proceedings from the far-end with some tight bowling, tempting the batsmen outside the off stump. Fraser from the Pavilion-end then came in with his classic ‘turn and burn’, quickly finding the first wicket of the game and his 150th for the Erratics(!!). The following over, a straighter delivery from Youngman was clipped hard and uppishly off the pads to square-leg and looked sure to result in a boundary. This was until the ball thundered straight into the hands of Mark Philips, taking a very difficult catch given the speed and force of the ball. With tight fielding to stop any downhill boundaries the Erratics got the innings off to a good start.

The first bowling changes saw Krups and Walding come into the attack with combinations of pace, bounce, and late movement being utilised to dispatch two more Woodbury batsmen. The first, a running catch from Skipper JK at extra cover off of Krups, and the second, a late outside edge clipping the top of the off stump bail from the bowling of Walding. George was then brought on at the Pavilion-end and started well with his off stump deliveries but was then unlucky to find himself on the short end of some hard hitting from the Woodbury left-hander, who would go on to retire and be his side’s top scorer for the game. To finish off the innings Fraser and Nick were brought back on, containing the Woodbury middle order thanks to a great fielding effort by all. It should also be noted that Siva kept wicket very well considering the trampoline nature of the artificial wicket where he nearly had to wear the ball on his chin on a few occasions!

So with 18 overs bowled in a slightly shortened format of the already shortest format of the game, the Erratics were set a target of 108 to win. Due to Woodbury only having 8 players it was agreed that the Erratics would supply a fielder every 3 overs to help fill the numbers (A very nice gesture indeed Skip…). So with only nine in the field, an artificial track, and our esteemed batting line up, spirits were high.

The run chase started off well, if not a little slow with Fraser and Krups getting acclimatised to the bounce from the artificial wicket and patiently waiting for their opportunity to attack. Then out of nowhere a huge six from Fraser, his 10th of the season, started off a series of shots to salivate at. More boundaries from both batsmen followed with 4s and 6s coming in all direction, Krups clearly not wanting to be left out of the party, and the opening partnership mounted to 35 runs. Then in potentially a West Indies - calypso collapso - style, a rush of wickets fell. Fraser was first, bowled trying to heave a straight ball. Krups was then found LBW according to Umpire Youngman to the dismay of the Pavilion (perhaps a new directive from the Bowlers’ Union, who knows!). Mark Phillips was then caught looking to attack the bowlers after making a couple of runs. And then Nick Walding was out for a duck in very uneventful circumstances that don’t require any detail here (or should I re-Frase that?!?). Martin Weiler sought to steady the ship with some strong hitting which included a tremendous back foot pull for four. However he too was then bowled trying to heave a straight one after making 23. This brought Skipper JK and fellow left hander George Cockburn together in the middle. Both played some nice shots onto the leg side and did tick the scoreboard along but were both out before they were really able to kick on. With the game poised on 97 for 7, with 12 to get off the last 3 overs, Siva came to the middle and looked to attack from the start. With a fantastic boundary to begin with he was unlucky to be run out trying to take a quick single.

With the light drawing in, and the field tightening, the pressure was on. Your correspondent found himself in the field for the final overs to get a real sense of the action that was to unfold (or to be the final sub-fielder, who knows? Maybe both). John Curtis and Ben Youngman were the batsmen tasked with the job, running as many singles as possible. We were left with 4 to win off the final over. However due to some tight death bowling we were held to 3 runs with the last ball seeing John ran out chasing the win. And so with things level we called time. It was a definite improvement on the previous day’s performance at Coaver Club even though the win eluded us. It was a thrilling end to our 2017 T20 fixtures and finished in the only way suitable; with some well-earned drinks in the pavilion!
