Pitt Farm Invitation XI v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 23 Apr 2017 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Arriving at Clyst St. George, the lack of April showers meant we were greeted by some solid ground, and then at the pavilion by founder, captain and president of the (Democratic Republic of) Pitt Farm Invitation XI, Gary Abrahams. Unfortunately, Pitt the Younger, Ben Abrahams, was elsewhere. Pitt the Elder, Gary, then posed a quirky format to Erratics skipper, Jeff Haynes, in which the game would comprise two innings: a Twenty20 followed by a two-and-a-half hour innings, in which the first batting side would set a target for the second the chase. Failure to make the target by loss of all wickets would results in a loss; failure to make the target with wickets remaining, a draw; and making the target, a win, of course. Kudos to Gary here, as this format led to a lively, engaging and inclusive afternoon’s cricket.
Batting first, following Jeff’s win of the toss, Pitt Farm lost a second-ball wicket to Ben Youngman, bowling up the hill, and soon after a couple more to the returning Nigel Rutherford. Jeff and Chaves Fraser and Duncan added wickets, but Krupakar’s three for a mere six runs made the largest dent in Pitt Farm’s batting, ultimately posting a first-innings total of 93. Erratics posted 98 in response, with Danny Williamson and Duncan both retiring on 25, and Nick Walding almost following suit on 24, with his wicket intact as the overs ran out.
Gary allowed tea, which included rumoured-to-be-tasty lemon drizzle cake, rumours from those quicker on their toes to tea than me.
In the second innings Pitt Farm added 80 off 23 overs to their existing 93 before declaring, hampered by run restricting bowling, even more of Andrew Forrester’s bye-saving wicketkeeping, wickets to Fraser and Guy Clarke, and three more to Krupakar, taking his match-day total to 6 for just 15 runs. This left Erratics just over an hour to post 75 for the win. Openers Duncan and Nigel, both reaching 25 and retiring, set solids foundations, and a few overs later newcomer Tom Bennett-Hughes posted the winning runs with a cover drive to the boundary.
The day’s friendly and yet action-packed cricket appeared unanimously enjoyed by all, perhaps sewing the seed for an annual fixture, Gary, with a cup?
Ben Youngman.
