Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 19 May 2017 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Nick Walding reports...

Heavy rain in the afternoon meant a wet and slow outfield greeted us at the Coaver Club this evening, however with the skies now clear of any worrisome dark cloud it was a sunny start to the game.

With Skipper Hailwood opting to field first, Youngman and Hailwood started off proceedings with some good attacking bowling which proved troublesome to the batsmen and resulted in a wicket apiece. The first bowling change saw Fraser produce good bounce and turn off the wicket, constantly worrying the Sunsets’ batsmen at the crease and taking a well-earned 2 for 23 off his 4 overs. A spot of ‘proper cricket’ followed with Walding and Rutherford combining for a textbook away swing delivery and edge to first slip in the most classic of styles. The next delivery followed with a thunderous-well-squatted- leg before appeal that put Walding on a hat-trick ball. However in classic Erratics style the follow-up delivery resulted in 2 wides and a single before the end of over. A finish which left your correspondent wondering ‘Mark, just how did you do it?!?’

The final bowling change to Williamson and Rutherford carried on proving both troublesome and restrictive for the batsmen with more wickets falling in the final overs. A good bowling performance with a strong effort in the field and tireless commitment by Jonathan behind the stumps left the Erratics’ a target of 115 to win.

This was a target some scoffed as a very achievable score. However, not all was well in the Erratics camp. Not only did the run chase kick off to a less than emphatic start, a key member of the establishment had gone awry, namely Skipper Hailwood’s most treasured hat (Did you know the badge was hand-sewn on?!). Cries of ‘Have you seen my hat?!’ and ‘Where on Earth did I put it?!’ were heard among a number of patrons across the Coaver Club that evening. Alas Dearest could not be found. Suspicions of A. Chave playing mischief were also circulating in those early overs but still poor Skip was no closer to any reprieve and was certainly less than impressed.

Back to the action, Fraser and Rob begun the innings with some fine hitting but with small reward for their efforts, with Rob falling for just 5 despite some nice shots. However when F. Chave opened up the shoulders with delightful pulls to the boundary, the run-rate started to pick up and his unbeaten 30 soon followed. Now with Tom and Martin Wright at the crease things really turned up. With well dispatched balls and some rampant, and much needed, running between the wickets, Martin quickly brought up his 30. His applause off the pitch lasting perhaps longer than his actual innings with 3 4s and a 6 to his name.

Tom, now starting to play more expansively and using his much talked-about sweep shot, was unfortunate to fall leg-before on 12. With time running out and the light beginning to fade, the following Erratics batsmen knew the run-rate needed to be kept up in the final overs if there was a chance for victory. Spirited efforts by Weiler and Rutherford were the prelude to a hard-hitting partnership by Williamson and Kirby with the latter hitting the winning runs with consecutive pull shots to the leg-side that were well run/limped with a ball to go.

Now back to more pressing matters for not everyone’s spirits were high following this nail biting finish. Over pasties, it was discovered that Dearest was unknowingly stashed away into a fellow Erratic’s kitbag but was soon restored to its rightful place. Once reunited with his Dearest, Skip Hailwood was able to look back fondly on a victory well-earned with pasty and pint in hand.

And so the sun set on another fantastic mid-week fixture full of rampant running, a sniff of ‘proper cricket’, and a classic tale of reunited loves. Many thanks to Bernie for the well enjoyed pasties and for the most ‘generous’ of umpiring (they weren’t that wide!).
